How access to Water is Improving Maternal and Child Health

By Namuloni Jackie

The Ministry of Health in Uganda has recently reported on the success of a maternal and child health program in rural areas of the country, particularly in the district of Iganga. The program, which is implemented by a local non-governmental organization, focuses on providing education and resources to pregnant women and new mothers on topics such as proper nutrition, childbirth, and infant care.

One of the program’s key achievements has been the increase in the number of women giving birth at health facilities, particularly at the Iganga Referral Hospital. This is a result of the education provided by the program, which has led to an increased awareness of the importance of prenatal care and skilled birth attendants. This has led to a reduction in maternal and infant mortality rates in the area.

The program has also had a significant impact on the overall health and well-being of families in the community. One such success story is that of a woman named Sarah, who lives in a small village in the district of Iganga. Before participating in the program, Sarah had limited knowledge about maternal and child health and struggled to provide proper nutrition for her children. Through the program, she learned about the importance of a balanced diet and how to prepare nutritious meals for her family. This has led to marked improvements in the health and development of her children.
