Kampala: Kampala’s slum dwellers now have improved access to sanitation facilities, thanks to a project launched by the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) in 2020.For years, residents of the city’s sprawling slum areas have struggled with limited access to basic sanitation facilities. But now, thanks to a new project launched by the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA).The project, which was launched in 2020, has focused on improving sanitation in several of Kampala’s most densely populated slum areas, including Kisenyi, Bwaise, and Makindye. So far, the project has constructed several new community toilets for households and rehabilitated existing ones, providing much-needed relief to thousands of residents.

According to Mr. Allan Nkurunzinza, a senior KCCA staff, the project has been a huge success, with residents reporting a significant improvement in their living conditions. “The construction of these toilets has had a huge impact on the community,” he said. “It’s not just about having a place to go to the bathroom, it’s about improving people’s overall health and well-being.’’

The project has also provided employment opportunities for local residents, with many of the construction enterprises being recruited from the slum areas themselves. This has helped to boost the local economy, and has given residents a sense of ownership and pride in the new facilities.

Mr. Nkurunzinza, highlighted the importance of such project in addressing the sanitation crisis in Kampala’s slum areas, “Sanitation is a basic human right, and it’s essential for the health and well-being of communities. We are proud to be working with different stakeholders to improve the lives of people in these areas.”
